On Friday, we woke up early and got ready to head to Akumal to snorkel and hopefully see some turtles. With anything that you research online, you never know if reality will meet expectation. Would we get to see these amazing turtles? Would the water be as clear as I had read about online? Would we get to see any fish?
We wanted to beat the tour buses and crowds, so we ate breakfast quickly and made the short 20 minute drive to Akumal. The main road was closed off so we drove to the next exit and snaked our way through some side roads until we found the beach. We walked about a mile back to the main beach and asked some locals where we might be able to see the "tortugas." They pointed us toward a roped off area and we got our snorkel gear on and hit the water. Tracie and Grace soon saw three turtles. We ended up swimming with them for about an hour, taking pictures and video and just watching these gentle, prehistoric animals eat and swim. This ended up being one of our favorite parts of the trip.
Afterward we drove to Tulum to try and go see the ruins. We ate lunch and then drove to the ruins. We arrived about 4:00 only to find out that the ruins closed at 5:00 so we decided not to stay. We drove back to Playa and walked went back to El Fogon for another amazing dinner. After dinner we walked 5th avenue and enjoyed the Mexican Christmas decorations.
